The advantages of collecting the Qur’an during the era of Abu Bakr

The collection of the Qur’an during the era of Abu Bakr had a great status among the Muslims, as there was no disagreement about anything in it, and it was distinguished by many advantages, including13)

  1. He collected the Qur’an according to the most accurate aspects of research and investigation, and the safest principles of scientific verification, as we have seen in Abu Bakr’s method in collecting the Qur’an.
  2. The consensus of the nation was achieved on its acceptance, and all Muslims were satisfied with it.
  3. What was collected in this collection reached the level of tawatur, as it was attended and witnessed by more than the number of tawatur from the Companions.
  4. He limited the collection of the Qur’an to what was proven to be Qur’anic from the seven letters, by the proof of its presentation in the final presentation, so it was comprehensive of what remained of the seven letters, and there was nothing in it that had been abrogated in recitation.

  1. He arranged the verses without the surahs.

This blessed collection gained the satisfaction of the Muslims, and it received the consensus of the Companions, and they gave it the utmost care.

The pages in which the Qur’an was collected were kept by Abu Bakr until his death, then they were transferred to Umar until he died, then they were after that with his daughter Hafsa, the wife of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), then Uthman ibn Affan (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked her for them, so he copied the copies of the Qur’an from them to the provinces and then returned them to her, so the pages collected during the time of Abu Bakr (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) were the basis for copying the copies of the Qur’an during the time of Uthman (peace and

blessings of Allah be upon him). This is one of the things that indicates the status of this collection among the Companions (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Zayd ibn Thabit (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: The pages in which the Qur’an was collected were with Abu Bakr until Allah took his soul, then with Umar until Allah took his soul, then with Hafsa bint Umar. (6)

And on the authority of Ali (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) he said: May Allah have mercy on Abu Bakr; He was the person who received the greatest reward for collecting the Qur’an, and he was the first to collect the two tablets. (14)

Ibn Hajar said: If a fair-minded person contemplates what Abu Bakr did, he will be certain that it is considered among his virtues and will be praised for his great merits, because of the authenticity of his saying: “Whoever establishes a good practice will have its reward and the reward of whoever acts upon it.” (15)

Then he said: No one collected the Qur’an after him except that he will have a reward like his until the Day of Resurrection. (16)
