Did the Companions Go to Arafat While Dripping with Semen? Hadith Explained

7 min read 1444 words

This narration is often abused by dishonest polemicists because they isolate one phrase from its legal and ritual context. The hadith is not commanding vulgarity, nor is it saying that the Companions entered the sacred sites in a state of impurity. It is about the Prophet ﷺ teaching the permissibility of ending ihram after Umrah before entering ihram again for Hajj.

The Hadith Being Misused

Sahih Muslim 2131 — Hajj

“We, the companions of Muhammad ﷺ, entered into ihram for Hajj purely and exclusively.”

Ata’ said: Jabir said:

“The Prophet ﷺ came on the morning of the fourth of Dhul-Hijjah and ordered us to become halal.”

Ata’ said:

“They became halal and had intercourse with their wives.”

Ata’ said:

“He did not make it obligatory for them, but he made them lawful for them.”

So we said:

“Since there were only five days between us and Arafat, he ordered us to go to our wives, so we came to Arafat with our penises dripping with semen.”

Grade: Sahih

The Companions Followed the Prophet ﷺ Closely

The Companions رضي الله عنهم were the people who followed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the most and were the keenest on his guidance. Whenever they found the Prophet ﷺ doing something, they followed him in it.

When they found that the Prophet ﷺ had performed the minor pilgrimage but had not yet completed the state of ihram, they wanted to do the same. When he ordered them to complete the state of ihram, they asked questions.

Important

The Companions were not objecting out of rebellion. They were asking because they wanted to follow the Prophet ﷺ correctly and feared violating the sanctity of Hajj.

Their Astonishment Came from Reverence for the Sacred Ritual

The Companions grew up in the pre-Islamic era venerating the Sacred Monument, and Islam established them on reverence for the sacred rites. When the Prophet ﷺ ordered them to complete the state of ihram for the minor pilgrimage and wait for the major pilgrimage, they felt in their souls that there was something significant about doing what they normally did in their homes with their wives while so close to Hajj.

So they asked in astonishment: would we go and come to Mina while our private parts are dripping with semen?

The Prophet ﷺ informed them that Allah, who prescribed ihram for performing the rituals, also prescribed that they may complete the state of ihram until the day of the ritual comes, when they can enter ihram again.

The Prophet ﷺ Did Not Command Them to Have Intercourse

The Prophet ﷺ did not tell them after the minor pilgrimage: “Go and come back with your private parts dripping with semen.” That is the filthy framing of the polemicist, not the wording or intent of the Prophet ﷺ.

Rather, he ordered them to break the state of ihram and do all permissible things until the time for entering ihram for Hajj came. This was to make things easier for them.

Response

The Prophet ﷺ permitted what Allah made lawful after exiting ihram. He did not issue a vulgar command to have intercourse before Arafat. The hadith is about the permissibility of ending ihram after Umrah and then entering ihram again for Hajj.

It Was Permission, Not Obligation

The narrators of the narrations mentioned by the mudallis said: “He did not make it obligatory for them,” meaning it was not an order of obligation. Rather, he was informing them that it is permissible for the pilgrim to break the state of ihram after Umrah, wait for the time of Hajj, and then enter ihram again.

This is a legal point in Hajj. The narration is explaining tamattu’ and the permissibility of what becomes lawful after exiting ihram.

Tamattu’

A form of Hajj in which a pilgrim performs Umrah first, exits ihram, then enters ihram again later for Hajj.

The Phrase Is Rhetorical Exaggeration

The Arabic language knows many styles, including exaggeration in speech for a rhetorical purpose, as well as metaphor. When the Companions heard the Prophet’s ﷺ order for them to break the state of ihram, they were amazed and said: should we go to our women and then go to Arafat while our penises are dripping with semen?

This statement does not mean that they entered the sacred sites while they were in a state of ritual impurity, or that each one of them was literally dripping with semen from his private parts. Glory be to Allah.

Its meaning is: should we turn to Allah with worship that requires detachment from the world and its pleasures, when a short while ago we were doing all its permissible things, even intercourse with women?

The Bible also uses exaggeration as a rhetorical method:

Matthew 23:24

“You blind guides! Who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel.”

Is it conceivable that someone literally swallows a camel, or is this rhetorical exaggeration?

The answer is obvious. The same principle applies here. The phrase is emphatic and rhetorical, not a literal claim that the Companions entered Hajj rituals in a filthy state.

The Prophet ﷺ Clarified the Matter

When the Prophet ﷺ heard what they were saying, he went out to teach them that if he had not brought the sacrificial animals, he would have ended his state of ihram with them.

When they realized that the matter was a statement and instruction to the people that it is permissible for the pilgrim to end his state of ihram until the day of Hajj comes, they complied with the command. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.

The Full Text of the Incident

Al-Bayhaqi included in his Sunan al-Kubra the full incident, saying:

Al-Bayhaqi — Al-Sunan al-Kubra

“We went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ and we did not think that it was Hajj. When we approached Mecca, the Messenger of God ﷺ ordered those who had a sacrificial animal with them to remain in their state of ihram, and those who did not have a sacrificial animal with them to exit ihram.”

Al-Bayhaqi also narrated:

Al-Bayhaqi — Al-Sunan al-Kubra, 3787

“We, the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, entered ihram for Hajj alone, with no one else with him, for Hajj alone. We arrived in Mecca on the morning of the fourth of Dhul-Hijjah, and the Prophet ﷺ ordered us to enter ihram and make it Umrah.

He heard from us that we said: since there were only five days between us and Arafat, we were ordered to exit ihram and go to Mina, and our private parts were dripping with semen.

The Prophet ﷺ stood up and addressed us, saying: ‘What you said has reached me, and I am the most righteous of you and the most pious of you. Were it not for the sacrificial animal, I would have exited ihram. If I were to start over in my affair what I have turned back, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal.’

Ali came from Yemen and said: ‘What did you enter into ihram for?’

He said: ‘What the Prophet ﷺ entered into ihram for.’

He said: ‘Then make a sacrifice and remain in ihram as you are.’”

Suraqah ibn Ju’sham asked the Prophet ﷺ:

Sahih al-Nasa’i 2804

“O Messenger of God, do you think this Umrah of ours is for this year or for eternity?”

He said:

“It is for eternity.”

Grade: Sahih — Al-Albani

Conclusion

Success

The hadith is about the permissibility of exiting ihram after Umrah and later entering ihram again for Hajj. The phrase about “dripping with semen” is an expression of astonishment from the Companions, not a literal statement that they entered the sacred rites in impurity. The Prophet ﷺ clarified that the ruling was lawful, merciful, and part of the legislation of tamattu’.
