Objection 7 — The Loss of the Two Valleys Verse
Abu Musa al-Ash’ari sent for the reciters of the people of Basra, and three hundred men who had recited the Quran entered upon him. He said: “You are the best of the people of Basra and their reciters, so recite it, and do not let the time be long for you lest your hearts harden, as the hearts of those who were before you hardened. We used to recite a surah, and we used to make it similar in length to one of the glorifying surahs, so I forgot it, except that I memorized from it: ‘If the son of Adam had two valleys of wealth, he would seek a third valley, and nothing fills the stomach of the son of Adam except dust.’ And we were reading a surah, and we were likening it to one of the glorifying surahs, so I forgot it, except that I memorized from it: ‘O you who have believed, why do you say that which you do not know? You do, and it will be written as a testimony around your necks, and you will be asked about it on the Day of Resurrection.’”

Objection 10 — The Loss of Surah Al-Hafd and Surah Al-Khala’
Two surahs are alleged to have been lost from the Quran. The text of Surah Al-Khala’ reads: “O Allah, we seek Your help and ask Your forgiveness and praise You for good and do not deny You and abandon and forsake whoever defies You.” The text of Surah Al-Hafd reads: “O Allah, You alone do we worship, and to You we pray and prostrate, and to You we strive and hasten. We hope for Your mercy and fear Your severe punishment. Indeed, Your punishment will overtake the disbelievers.”
