Prostitution in Ancient Egypt: Anthropologist Douglas Brewer says: Late-night drinking in taverns often led to singing, dancing, and playing, and males and females were free to interact with each other . Taverns remained open late into the night, and customers drank beer in such large quantities that intoxication was not uncommon . The streets of the major cities of the Early Dynastic period undoubtedly contained a number of “beer halls,” and later texts refer to ” prostitutes ” who could be found there. Proverbs warning young men to avoid fraternizing with ” a woman who has no home ” indicate the presence of a form of prostitution in ancient Egyptian society , perhaps from the beginning of the Naqada III period, when large population centers emerged.

Egyptologist Charlotte Booth tells us that historical documents indicating the prevalence of prostitution in Egypt are not extensive, but she then cites evidence that indicates how common it was, saying: “As ‘the oldest profession in the world,’ there is no doubt that prostitution was common. Scholars have suggested that some banquet performers may have earned a little extra income at gatherings. Records show that a particular group of dancers known as Hn-mut provided sexual services in exchange for financial payment. However, most of the evidence for prostitutes comes from the Greco-Roman period, when prostitution was taxed and records were kept . Some small details about prostitutes’ practices are also recorded. For example, many prostitutes had seductive messages, such as “Follow me ,” engraved on the soles of their sandals, leaving an imprint in the mud with each step.
