How can the Jews ask the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, “And they ask you about the soul,” while the Jews are in Medina and the entire Surah Al-Isra’ is Meccan?
The doubt says: - How could the Jews of Medina ask Muhammad (peace be upon him ) about the soul and Allah Almighty’s response be revealed : - {And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about the soul. Say, “The soul is from the command of my Lord.”} Surah Al-Isra’ Imam Ahmad said: Waki’ narrated to us, Al-A’mash narrated to us, on the authority of Ibrahim, on the authority of Alqamah, on the authority of Abdullahis Ibn Mas’ud, mayAllah with him - he said: I was walking with the Prophet (peace beuponhim) in a field in Medina, and he was leaning on a palm branch, and he passed by some Jews, so some of them said to each other: Ask him about the soul. Some of them said: Do not ask him. He said: So they asked him about the soul and they said: O Muhammad, what is the soul? He continued leaning on the palm branch. He said: I thought that revelation was being sent to him, so he said:{And they ask you about the spirit. Say, “The spirit is from the command of my Lord. And you have not been given of knowledge except a little.”}Some of them said to each other: We told you not to ask him. continued : The entire surah is Meccan. It was supposed to be a Medinan surah . The response Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir said in his interpretation (5\114)entire surah isMeccan. The answer to this may be:It may have been revealed to him in Medina a second time, as it was revealed to him in Mecca before that, or that the revelation was revealed to him that he would answer their question with the verse that was revealed to him earlier, which is this verse: {And they ask you about the soul}. There is no objection to that except the foolish mind of the Christians.
