Is Allah a Moon God? The Claim Debunked — And Why Yahweh Has a Bigger Problem
The Moon God Accusation
Critics argue that Allah is derived from or connected to a pagan moon deity worshipped in pre-Islamic Arabia, and that Islam is therefore rooted in moon worship.
The Name “Allah” Has No Pagan Origin
[!quote] Dr. Albert van den Branden — History of Thamud
“It is unlikely that the Prophet Muhammad borrowed the name of Allah from the pagan world, just as it is impossible that he adopted its meaning. Long before Islam there were thousands of Arab Christians who worshipped the one God under the name of Allah.”

Linguistic Breakdown — “Iah” ≠ “Allah”
The accusation relies on a false phonetic similarity between the Arabic/Hebrew “Yah” and the Egyptian “Iah.” These are distinct words from distinct language families with no etymological connection.
- Arabic key reference: Madinah Arabic Book 1
- Hebrew word for deity — the Aleph at the end of the Aramaic word for God is the definite article, not a root shared with “Iah”

If Anything, Look at Yahweh
Those who raise the moon god accusation against Islam often overlook that their own tradition carries far stronger linguistic and iconographic links to moon deity.
The Egyptian Moon God “Iah / Yah”
“Aâh” or “Iâh” or “Yâh” is a well-documented deity in Egyptian mythology, always associated with the moon — appearing alongside moon gods Thôt and Khonsu.

Above the head ofeach of the three moon gods (Yah, Thôt, Khonsu) is a sun disc (symbolizing supreme divinity) and a crescent in reference to the moon.
Hieroglyphic Evidence
From hierogl.ch:
iah = moon (planet or god) | dieu = god

The Bible Itself Uses “Yah”
Hebrew text:
(Yahh):
“Contracted for H3068, and meaning the same; Jah, the sacred name.”

The Moon in Judaism
From research published on interbible.org:

“Passover is an ancient celebration linked to the moon — a night celebration marking the beginning of the hot season and the harvest season.”
- The Jewish Passover falls on 14 Nisan — a date calculated by the lunar calendar
- Revelation 6:12 references a full moon: “…the sun became black like mourning clothing, and the full moon became like blood”
The Sun-Disc and Crescent — A Striking Parallel
Patristic interpretation: “Christ is a sun, and the Church is a moon.”
Compare this to the iconography of Yah, the Egyptian moon god — a sun disc above and a crescent below:
