Satan's Prick at Birth — Does the Hadith Prove Jesus's Divinity
Among the attempts to prove the divinity of Jesus (AS) through Islamic sources is a citation of an authentic hadith describing Satan’s interaction with every newborn at birth. The argument fails on every level — textual, theological, and comparative. We address it systematically.
The Hadith
Grade: Sahih · Bukhari & Muslim · Also recorded by Ahmad (8237), Al-Baghawi (4209) — authenticated by Al-Arna’ut: “authentic with a good chain”
A supporting narration adds:
Grade: Sahih · Muslim · Via Abdullah bin Abdul Rahman Al-Darimi — Abu Al-Yaman — Suhayl bin Abi Salih — his father — Abu Hurairah
The Objection
Islam itself confirms that Satan could not touch Jesus at birth — unlike every other human being. This supernatural exemption sets Jesus apart from all of humanity and proves his divine nature.
The Response
The hadith confirms no such thing. Four distinct points dismantle this argument entirely.
First: The Protection of Jesus (AS) Has an Explicit Cause — His Grandmother’s Supplication
The exemption of Jesus (AS) and his mother Mary from Satan’s prick at birth is not an unexplained miracle pointing to divinity. The Quran records its precise cause:
“Then when she gave birth to her, she said: My Lord, indeed I have given birth to a female — and Allah knows best what she has given birth to — and the male is not like the female. And indeed I have named her Mary, and indeed I seek refuge for her and her offspring in You from Satan, the accursed.”
[!scholar] Sheikh Safi Al-Rahman Al-Mubarakfuri — Mannat Al-Mun’im fi Sharh Sahih Muslim (4/62)
Allah protected the Messiah and his mother from the pricking of Satan by the blessing of the supplication of the mother of Mary — the wife of Imran — who sought refuge for Mary and her offspring from Satan the accursed.
The protection of Jesus (AS) was the answer to a human supplication — not evidence of his divinity. It was granted by Allah in response to the prayer of his grandmother. A gift granted by Allah to a servant is not proof that the servant is Allah.
Second: This Protection Was Not Unique to Jesus (AS) — All Prophets Share In It
[!scholar] Qadi Iyad (d. 544 AH) — cited in Umdat Al-Qari (15/176)
All the prophets (peace and blessings be upon them) share with Jesus (AS) in this protection. Al-Qurtubi transmitted this as the position of Qatadah.
The hadith mentions Jesus (AS) by name because the narration was being delivered in a specific context — it does not follow that he alone among all creation was exempt. The prophets of Allah are protected by Allah. Their protection is a function of prophethood, not divinity.
Third: Satan’s Prick Does Not Imply Control — Even the Prophets Were Exposed to Temptation
A further error in the objection is the assumption that Satan’s prick at birth would lead to misguidance — and that exemption from it therefore marks absolute spiritual superiority.
“Indeed, My servants — you have no authority over them. And sufficient is your Lord as Disposer of affairs.”
[!scholar] Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani — Fath Al-Bari (8/212, Salafi Edition)
The apparent meaning of the report is that the devil is able to touch every newborn at birth. But from the sincere servants of Allah, that touch did not harm them at all. Allah excepted Mary and her son — he went to touch them as he usually did and was prevented. This is the aspect of exclusivity — it does not necessitate his control over others among the sincere servants.
[!scholar] Al-Mazari / Al-Qurtubi — Al-Mufhim lima Ashkala min Talkhis Kitab Muslim (6/178, Dar Ibn Kathir)
It is a corrupt assumption to conclude that the devil’s prodding necessitates the misguidance or seduction of the one prodded. How often has the devil exposed the prophets and saints to corruption — and yet Allah protected them from what the devil desired.
Fourth: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Was Given a Superior and Unique Distinction
Far from the hadith elevating Jesus (AS) above all creation, the Islamic record is clear that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was granted a distinction that surpasses even the exemption given to Jesus (AS) and Mary:
(Al-Mufhim, 6/178)
This distinction was given to no one else — not to Jesus (AS), not to Mary (AS). The Prophet ﷺ alone was granted this complete protection from the inside.
The Biblical Comparison — Islam Honors Jesus More Than the Bible Does
Having established that the hadith contains no proof of divinity, it is worth placing the two traditions side by side:
“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was afterward hungry. Then the tempter came to him and said: ‘If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.’ He answered: ‘It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
The Islamic hadith says Satan could not even touch Jesus (AS) at birth — he was blocked by the veil. The Christian Bible says Satan led Jesus into the wilderness, subjected him to forty days of temptation, and directly challenged his identity as the Son of God.
Islam honors the person of Jesus (AS) more than the Christian scripture does.
The hadith of Satan’s prick at birth proves nothing about the divinity of Jesus (AS). The protection was caused by his grandmother’s supplication recorded in the Quran. It is shared by all the prophets according to Qadi Iyad and Qatadah. Satan’s touch does not imply control over the one touched. And the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was granted a protection — the submission of his qareen — that surpasses even what was given to Jesus and Mary. The Christian scripture, by contrast, places Jesus in direct satanic temptation for forty days. Islam is the tradition that truly honors and protects the dignity of the Messiah (AS).
