The Number of British Converts to Islam Is Doubling Every Year

The Independent: The newspaper publishes a report in which it reveals the doubling of the number of Britons who have converted to Islam in the past ten years. The newspaper says that one of the comprehensive attempts to estimate the number of people who believe in Islam in the United Kingdom has found that the number of Britons who have chosen Islam as their religion has doubled in the past decade.

The newspaper goes on to say that in the wake of the global spread of Islamic extremism, British Muslims have faced more scrutiny, criticism and analysis than followers of any other religion. Despite the negative image of Islam in Britain, thousands of Britons convert to Islam every year.

Estimating the number of religious converts living in Britain has long been difficult because statistics do not differentiate between whether a person who believes in one religion has converted to another or was born into that religion. Previous estimates of the number of converts to Islam in Britain have ranged from 14,000 to 25,000.

However, a new study by the Faith Matters Centre, an interfaith think tank, suggests the real figure is much higher, at 100,000, with 5,000 people converting to Islam each year across the country.
