The Splitting of the Heaven: The Quran's Prediction of the Big Rip

4 min read 849 words

The Quran describes the splitting and tearing apart of the heaven at the end of time — a phenomenon that modern cosmology now recognises as a real possible fate of the universe, known as the Big Rip. A skeptic might ask: how can air or gas be split? The answer comes not from theology alone but from modern physics.

The Quranic Verses

Al-Inshiqaq 84:1–2 إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انشَقَّتْ ۝ وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ

“When the heaven is split asunder and obeys its Lord — and it is right that it should.”

Al-Haqqah 69:16 وَانشَقَّتِ السَّمَاءُ فَهِيَ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاهِيَةٌ

“And the heaven will split, and on that Day it will be frail.”

“As We began the first creation, We will repeat it.”

Al-Dhariyat 51:47 وَالسَّمَاءَ بَنَيْنَاهَا بِأَيْدٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ

“And the heaven — We constructed it with strength, and indeed, We are its expander.”

There is an entire Quranic surah — Surat Al-Inshiqaq — devoted to describing this great event. The Quran also describes the scattering of the planets in Surat Al-Infitar, which may correspond to the same cosmological event.

What Modern Science Says: The Big Rip

Western science identifies one of the possible ends of the universe as a catastrophic tearing-apart called the Big Rip. The HUBBLE website states:

NASA / HUBBLE — On the Big Rip “The universe that was born as a result of a violent expansion will also end in the same way. The universe will also die as a result of a violent expansion known as the Big Rip.”

The Wikipedia article on the Big Rip states:

Wikipedia — Big Rip (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Rip) “In physical cosmology, the Big Rip is a hypothetical cosmological model concerning the ultimate fate of the universe, in which the matter of the universe — from stars and galaxies to atoms and subatomic particles, and even spacetime itself — is progressively torn apart by the expansion of the universe at a certain time in the future.”

The sequence of the tearing is as follows: clusters of galaxies will first disband and separate; then galaxies themselves will be torn apart; then the solar system, stars, and planets; then molecules and atoms themselves will be shredded by the ever-faster expansion. The universe that was born in a violent expansion could end with an even more violent expansion — the Big Rip.

The Correspondence

^^The Quran used the word inshaqqa — to split, tear, or rend asunder — for the heaven at the end of time, fourteen centuries before modern cosmology identified the Big Rip as a possible fate of the universe.^^

The correspondence between the two accounts is precise in several respects. The Quran describes the heaven as becoming wahiyah — frail — on the Day of the splitting [Al-Haqqah 69:16], which corresponds to the progressive weakening and tearing of spacetime. The Quran describes the event as a reversal of the original creation — “as We began the first creation, We will repeat it” [Al-Anbiya 21:104] — and the Big Rip scenario is indeed described by cosmologists as the violent end of the same universe that began in a violent expansion. The Quran also explicitly affirms that We are the expanders of the heaven [Al-Dhariyat 51:47] — establishing the ongoing expansion of the universe as a Quranic fact, and the Big Rip as the endpoint of that same expansion taken to its extreme.

This scenario still has scientific questions if it relies on a defect in dark energy without adequate reference to dark matter. However, the scenario provides a conceptual link between the expansion of the sky to the point of collapse and the Quranic descriptions of splitting and scattering of the planets. Perhaps what prevents the final splitting is the continuous process of expansion that the Creator sustains — and when that process reaches its endpoint, the promise of splitting and the scattering of the planets is fulfilled. The matter requires further study and deeper engagement with the Quranic terminology alongside the evolving understanding of the Big Rip theory.

The splitting of the heaven at the end of time is described in the Quran across multiple surahs — Al-Inshiqaq, Al-Haqqah, Al-Anbiya, and Al-Dhariyat — as a definite, ordained event. Modern cosmology now identifies the Big Rip as a scientifically plausible fate of the universe, in which the accelerating expansion of the universe progressively tears apart galaxies, solar systems, atoms, and spacetime itself. The Quran affirmed the expansion of the universe [Al-Dhariyat 51:47] and its eventual splitting — both of which are now confirmed as serious cosmological propositions — fourteen centuries before the instruments and mathematics that could describe them were developed. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.
