Does the Qur’an Contradict Itself on Pregnancy and Breastfeeding?
Some skeptics imagine that there is confusion between Allah’s saying:
“His mother bore him, with weakness upon weakness, and his weaning was in two years.”
— Luqman 31:14
And His saying:
“Mothers shall nurse their children two complete years for whoever wishes to complete the nursing.”
— Al-Baqarah 2:233
And His saying:
“His gestation and weaning is thirty months.”
— Al-Ahqaf 46:15
They ask: how can breastfeeding be two complete years in the first two verses, while pregnancy and breastfeeding together are thirty months in the third verse? Does this contradict modern science?
The objection collapses once the verses are read together.
The Qur’an says breastfeeding is two years. Then it says pregnancy and weaning together are thirty months. So how can the same subject be described with two years in one place and thirty months in another?
The Basic Answer
There is no contradiction.
It also says pregnancy and weaning together are thirty months.
Therefore:
30 months − 24 months = 6 months
This indicates that the minimum period of pregnancy is six months.
The verses are not contradicting each other. They explain each other.
The Qur’anic Verses
“And We have commanded man concerning his parents. His mother carried him, with weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the final destination.”
“Mothers shall breastfeed their children two complete years for whoever wishes to complete the nursing.”
“And We have commanded man to be good to his parents. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning is thirty months.”
The Qur’an Explains Itself
The Qur’anic method here is simple. One verse gives the total duration of pregnancy and weaning together:
Pregnancy + weaning = 30 months
Two other verses give the full duration of breastfeeding:
Weaning / breastfeeding = 2 years = 24 months
So the minimum pregnancy period is known by subtraction:
30 months total − 24 months breastfeeding = 6 months minimum pregnancy
This is not a contradiction. It is a calculation derived by reading the verses together.
Why Six Months Is the Minimum
The verse in Surah Al-Ahqaf does not, by itself, explicitly say the minimum pregnancy period is six months. Rather, the minimum is known when this verse is combined with the verses in Surah Luqman and Surah Al-Baqarah.
Surah Luqman and Surah Al-Baqarah give the complete period of nursing.
When the complete nursing period is subtracted from the combined total, six months remain.
This is why the scholars stated that the shortest pregnancy period is six months.
Al-Shanqeeti’s Explanation
“His gestation and weaning is thirty months”
is understood together with:
“His weaning is in two years”
and:
“Mothers shall breastfeed their children two complete years.”
Since two years equals twenty-four months, subtracting twenty-four from thirty leaves six months. Thus, the minimum duration of pregnancy is six months.

Agreement with Medical Reality
A six-month pregnancy is extremely premature, but it is not impossible. Modern medicine recognizes that some infants born around this stage may survive, especially with medical support.
The Qur’an is not saying that every pregnancy lasts six months. It indicates the minimum possible duration when the verses are combined.
So the critic’s claim fails. The Qur’an does not say pregnancy is always six months, nor does it say pregnancy and breastfeeding are both only two years. It distinguishes between breastfeeding alone and pregnancy plus weaning together.
