Sahih al-Bukhari 2467

The Messenger of God said: Who will excuse me from a man who has harmed my family ? By God, I have never known anything about my family except good. They mentioned a man about whom I have never known anything except good, and he would never enter upon my family except with me.

Sad ibn Muadh stood up and said : O Messenger of God, by God, I will excuse you from him. If he is from the Aws, we will strike his neck, and if he is from our brothers from the Khazraj, you will order us to do what you command. Sad ibn Ubadah

, the chief of the Khazraj, stood up and was a righteous man before that, but his zeal overcame him and he said : You have lied, by God, you will not kill him and you will not be able to do so. Asid ibn Hudayr stood up and said: You have lied, by God, we will kill him, for you are a hypocrite arguing on behalf of the hypocrites. The two tribes, the Aws and the Khazraj, were agitated until they were about to stand while the Messenger of God was on the pulpit.

First: The hypocrites were always working to harm the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and to cause discord among the Muslims. This is something that proves the truth of the prophethood and its spread, otherwise the hypocrites would not have needed that.

Second: The story is that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) complained about the harm that his family had suffered from some hypocrites, a companion from the Aws got angry at the Prophet (peace be upon him) and began to threaten those who harmed the Prophet, but he did not take precautions in his speech and spoke in general terms. Saad bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) was one of the nobles and leaders of the Khazraj, so he did not like that from Saad bin Ubadah, who was from the Aws, so he got angry for his people, and he thought that Ibn Muadh would return the judgment of the Khazraj to the leaders of the Khazraj. This incident was part of the work of the hypocrites and their influence, and they always seek to cause discord among the Muslims by inciting discord. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not accept that from them, but rather he silenced them.

Third: The Muslims did not claim that the Companions were infallible, but rather they were human beings who made mistakes and were right. However, because of the honor of being the companions of the Prophet, they did not persist in making mistakes. Therefore, it was not mentioned that Sad ibn Ubadah continued in his harsh position, nor Sad ibn Muadh. Rather, it was not mentioned that they fought, but rather it was an evil that befell them until the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, stood as a barrier between the anger and the Companions, and the devil’s whisper was extinguished.
