Scientific Errors in the Bible: A Comprehensive Examination
The Bible contains numerous passages that stand in direct contradiction to established scientific fact, spanning astronomy, medicine, biology, embryology, nutrition, and geography. This note examines these passages one by one, comparing them where relevant to the Quranic account, which aligns with what modern science has confirmed.
Do the Heavens Have Pillars?
The Torah states in the Book of Job:
The Quran, by contrast, explicitly states:
“He created the heavens without pillars that you can see, and cast into the earth firm mountains, lest it should shift with you, and dispersed therein all kinds of moving creatures, and sent down water from the sky, and caused to grow therein all kinds of noble pairs.”
The Quran explicitly negates the existence of visible pillars supporting the heavens — a direct refutation of the Biblical claim confirmed by modern astronomy.

The Bible does not stop at claiming the sky has pillars — it also states that the earth itself rests upon pillars:
This is completely unscientific. Modern geology has established with precision the interior structure of the earth — the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core — and no physical pillars of any kind exist beneath the earth.

The Rainbow: A Sign God Made to Remember His Covenant?
This passage contains two problems — one theological, one scientific. The theological problem is that God requires a visual reminder to remember His own covenant — that is, the implication is that God forgets. Glory be to Allah — far exalted is He above forgetfulness. But this is not the focus of the scientific discussion.
The scientific problem is this: modern science has established beyond any doubt that the rainbow is caused by the refraction of sunlight through water droplets in rain or clouds. This is a fixed, universal law of physics — the law of refraction — that has operated since the creation of light itself. There must therefore have been countless thousands of rainbows before the time of Nuh (peace be upon him). If one insists that the rainbow first appeared at the time of Noah as a new sign, one is forced to conclude that the law of refraction did not exist before that moment — which is completely unscientific and physically impossible.
All Plants as Food — Including Poisonous Ones?
Any person with basic knowledge of botany knows that there are numerous plants that are fatally toxic to humans. These include deadly nightshade (berries), datura (jimsonweed), strychnine, and many others, which contain alkaloids, glycosides, and other toxic compounds — substances that cause death upon ingestion. How could the one who, according to the Old Testament, created the universe and created the children of Adam, not know that plants like these existed — and declare all plants food for mankind?
The Period of a Woman’s Uncleanness After Childbirth
In other words: the woman is unclean for 40 days if she gives birth to a boy, and unclean for double that period — 80 days — if she gives birth to a girl. No scientific, medical, or physiological basis exists for why giving birth to a female child would double the period of post-partum bleeding or purification compared to giving birth to a male child. Modern obstetrics and gynecology finds no distinction whatsoever in the post-partum recovery process based on the sex of the child.
Disinfecting a House from Leprosy — With Blood?
This passage prescribes sprinkling blood throughout a house as the method of disinfection against a plague of leprosy. Modern microbiology has established the precise opposite: blood is an excellent growth medium for bacteria, viruses, and toxins. Spreading blood throughout a house would propagate contamination, not eliminate it. No medical professional or infectious disease specialist would recommend the use of blood as a disinfectant — and yet this is what the Bible prescribes.
The Test of a True Believer — Handling Snakes and Drinking Poison
The Bible here presents a scientific test for distinguishing a true believer: a true believer can handle venomous snakes and drink poison without being harmed. This is a direct falsifiable claim that has been tested and refuted throughout history. The venom of serpents acts biochemically on the nervous system and blood — it does not distinguish between believers and non-believers. The same applies to poison.
Blood and Water from the Side of the Crucified — An Eyewitness?
Two scientific problems arise from this passage.
The first: the Gospel of Mark establishes that darkness had fallen over the entire earth during this event:
In total darkness, it is scientifically impossible for an observer to distinguish between blood and water with the naked eye. If blood and water are mixed, the resulting mixture appears red — darker or lighter depending on concentration — but is visually indistinguishable from blood alone. Even in full daylight, this distinction requires laboratory analysis and blood testing equipment, not naked-eye observation. The claim that a witness could see and testify to the distinction between blood and water in total darkness is not scientifically credible.
The second problem is medically significant: the flow of blood from a wound is conclusive evidence that the crucified person was not dead. The blood of the dead does not flow — cardiac activity is required to produce blood flow under pressure. A corpse does not bleed from a spear wound in the way described. This detail, which the author of John presents as evidence of death, is in fact strong evidence of the opposite.
Seeing the Moon’s Color When the Sun Has Gone Black
Modern astronomy has established that the moon has no light of its own — it reflects sunlight, functioning like a mirror for solar radiation. If the sun becomes completely black — emitting no light whatsoever — then the moon, receiving no light to reflect, would itself become invisible: dark and black, not blood-red. The text cannot be scientifically coherent: if the sun is pitch black, the surrounding space will be pitch black, and it would be impossible to see the sun itself, let alone observe the moon’s colour as resembling blood.
Is Jerusalem the Centre of the Earth?
This verse was interpreted for centuries to mean that Jerusalem is located at the geographical centre of the earth. This belief was stated explicitly by Saint Jerome and recorded by the medieval traveller Saint John Mandeville, who wrote that Jerusalem is located at the centre of the earth — a belief that remained dominant among most people until the modern era, when geographers proved its error. Jerusalem cannot be located at the geographical centre of the earth by any cartographic measurement.
The remarkable contrast is the modern scientific discovery announced in January 1977, based on complex mathematical calculations using computers over many years of research: Mecca is the geographical centre of the landmass of the earth. This was not claimed in ancient texts or medieval chronicles — it was established by modern science after extended research, and it corresponds to the holiest site in Islam.
The Stages of Fetal Development in the Bible — Cheese?
The stages of fetal formation as described in the Book of Job in sequence are as follows: first, forming man like clay; second, pouring him out like milk and curdling him like cheese; third, covering the curdled cheese with skin; then — in an order that inverts biological reality — covering the skin with flesh; then weaving the bones after the flesh and skin; then weaving the nerves; then giving life, then mercy, with care preserving the soul.
Any medical doctor or scientist can confirm that this sequence is entirely contrary to the established embryological order. In actual human development: the sperm fertilizes the egg to form a zygote; this develops into a blastocyst and implants in the uterine wall; the embryo forms a notochord around which the skeletal structure develops; muscles and connective tissue form around the skeletal framework; skin is the outermost layer derived from the ectoderm. The skin does not precede the flesh, and the bones do not come after the flesh and skin. The cheese analogy has no correspondence with any known biological process.
Compare this with what the Quran states:
“O mankind, if you are in doubt about the Resurrection — then indeed We created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot, then from a lump of flesh — formed and unformed — that We may make clear to you. And We cause whom We will to remain in the wombs for a specified term; then We bring you out as a child, then that you may reach your full maturity. And among you is he who is taken in death, and among you is he who is returned to the most decrepit old age so that he may not know anything after having known. And you see the earth barren, but when We send down upon it rain, it quivers and swells and grows abundantly of every beautiful pair.”
“And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay. (12) Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging. (13) Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump of flesh, and We made the lump of flesh into bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh. (14) Then We produced him as another creation — so blessed is Allah, the best of creators. (15) Then indeed, after that, you will die. (16)”
The Quranic sequence is precise and confirmed by modern embryology: sperm-drop → clinging clot (implantation and early embryo) → lump of flesh (embryonic mass) → bones → flesh clothing the bones. The bones form first and the flesh forms around them — exactly as established by modern developmental biology. This account was given to an unlettered man over fourteen hundred years ago. Many scholars and scientists who read these verses accepted that such knowledge could not have been self-generated — it is divine revelation.
While Aristotle, the “father of biology,” believed that a horse’s tail would turn into a worm if placed in water long enough… and while Hippocrates, the “father of medicine,” believed that the fetus grew due to an internal fire… The Messenger of God explicitly stated that the fetus develops its eyes and ears in the sixth week (42 days)…
Dead Flies in the Perfumer’s Ointment
And the verse immediately following presents its own problem:
The heart is located in the centre-left of the chest cavity in all human beings regardless of their wisdom or folly. This is established anatomy.
How Are Clouds Formed?
In the Van Dyck Arabic translation: “The clouds are the dust of His feet.”
Modern meteorology has established that clouds form through the evaporation of water from seas and oceans, which rises as water vapour, cools at altitude, and condenses around microscopic particles to form clouds. Clouds are not dust of any kind. They are condensed water vapour — composed of tiny water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. Saying that clouds are dust is scientifically incorrect by any measure.
Did the Disciples Sleep from Sorrow?
Psychologists and sleep researchers have established that grief, acute anxiety, and sorrow typically cause insomnia — difficulty sleeping — not sleep. Sleeping as a direct consequence of sorrow is not a recognised physiological or psychological mechanism. The statement contradicts the established understanding of how acute emotional distress affects the human sleep cycle.
Ostriches — Abandoning Their Eggs?
Modern ornithology has established that ostriches are in fact attentive parents. The male ostrich typically incubates the eggs at night and the female by day; both parents actively protect the nest. The description of the ostrich as an animal that abandons its eggs, forgets them, and allows them to be trampled reflects a profound ignorance of ostrich behaviour — an ignorance that the Bible attributes directly to God’s design.
Is the Earth Spherical? The “Circle” Argument
Christians have cited Isaiah 40:22 as a Biblical scientific miracle — proof that the Bible knew the earth was spherical:
Upon examining the original text in English, the word used is “circle” — referring to the circle of the horizon, not a sphere. A circle is a two-dimensional figure; a sphere is three-dimensional. The word does not establish that the earth is a globe. Furthermore, the same Book of Job that is being cited for scientific accuracy states:
The language of foundations, measurements, lines stretched over the earth, and a cornerstone establishes beyond doubt that the writer of the Bible believed the earth was flat and square, with physical corners, foundations beneath it, and a cornerstone at its base. This is a basic idea firmly established throughout the text of the Bible, appearing in multiple places with references to the corners of the earth, its foundations, and its cornerstone.
Birds with Four Legs
Birds do not have four legs. All birds are bipedal — they have two legs and two wings. The classification of birds as creatures that “go on all fours” reflects a fundamental error in basic zoology. No flying creature that uses all four limbs for locomotion in the manner described exists among birds.
