The Sun's Prostration: Quranic Cosmology and Modern Astronomy

6 min read 1305 words

The hadith of the sun’s prostration beneath the Throne, narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari, has been subjected to both theological and scientific scrutiny. This post demonstrates that the hadith is an authentic Prophetic interpretation of Surah Yasin 38, that the concept of prostration applies to all creation as submission to the Divine will, and that the sun’s described motion — once dismissed as primitive cosmology — converges with the modern astronomical discovery that the sun is not stationary but moves through space at tremendous velocity. We examine the classical scholarly interpretations of the hadith, the Quranic verse it explains, and the scientific reality of solar motion that was unknown until the twentieth century.

The Authentic Hadith of the Sun’s Prostration

Sahih al-Bukhari — On the authority of Abu Dharr (RA) The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said to Abu Dharr when the sun sets: “Do you know where it goes?” I said: “God and His Messenger know best.” He said: “It goes until it prostrates beneath the Throne, then asks permission and it is given permission. It is about to prostrate but it is not accepted from it, and it asks permission but it is not given permission. It is told: ‘Go back from whence you came.’ Then it rises from its place of setting.” Grade: Sahih · Al-Bukhari
And the sun runs to a resting place for it. That is the determination of the Almighty, the Knowing.

The hadith is an explicit Prophetic interpretation (tafsir) of this verse. The Prophet ﷺ explains that the sun’s “resting place” (mustaqarr) is its prostration beneath the Throne, and that its daily cycle of rising and setting is part of a divinely ordained cosmic order in which it submits to its Creator. The hadith and the verse are both revelation from Allah — the Quran in wording and the Sunnah in meaning — and neither can be understood in isolation from the other.

Classical Scholarly Interpretations

The meaning of sujud (prostration) in this context is not the physical act of placing the forehead on the ground as performed by humans in prayer. Rather, it is the universal submission of all creation to the will of its Creator — a concept the Quran affirms repeatedly.

Have you not seen that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and many of the people? But many upon whom the punishment has come into effect. And he whom Allah humiliates — for him there is none to give him honor. Indeed, Allah does what He wills.
Ibn Battal — Commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari “The sun’s asking permission means that God creates in it a life that can be spoken of, because God is able to revive inanimate and dead things.”
— Commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari “Another said: It is possible that asking permission was attributed to it metaphorically, and what is meant is the angels who are entrusted with it.”

The author of Aysar al-Tafasir addresses the apparent strangeness of the sun being beneath the Throne and engaging in speech: “The sun being under the throne is not strange, for the entire universe is under the throne. And its asking permission and being given permission is not strange, if the ant manages its life with the permission of its Lord and speaks, thinks and acts, then the sun is more deserving of that, and it speaks with its own speech and asks permission and is given permission.”Ibn Battal, commentary on the hadith of Abu Dharr in Sahih al-Bukhari.

The meaning of the prostration of these things — the sun, moon, stars, mountains, trees, and creatures — is their submission and what is seen in them of the effect of creation. So everything prostrates to Allah, the Exalted, meaning it submits to Him in what is desired. This is a matter that applies to every being in existence, no matter how great a person imagines its greatness and temptation. By its power and effect, it is under the rule of God, who disposes of it as He wishes, and every movement in the universe is by His command, glory be to Him.

Not everyone can realize that wherever the sun goes, it will remain like any other creation in the heavens and the earth: that it is prostrating, worshipping God Almighty under the Throne. Because the heavens and the earth are all under the Throne. And God Almighty says that it will remain like any other creation in the heavens and the earth, that it is prostrating, worshipping God Almighty under the Throne.

The Scientific Dimension: The Sun Is Not Stationary

The hadith contains a universal scientific fact that was only discovered in the modern era. It was previously believed that the sun was stationary in space — a fixed point around which the planets revolved. This assumption persisted from antiquity through the Copernican revolution and well into the nineteenth century. However, astronomers in the current scientific era discovered that the sun moves through space at a speed of more than a thousand miles per minute, orbiting the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

Modern astronomy confirms that the sun is not stationary. It moves through the galaxy at approximately 828,000 km/h (514,000 mph), completing one orbit of the galactic center every 225–250 million years. This discovery overturned the centuries-old assumption of solar fixity.

The hadith states that the sun “goes until it prostrates beneath the Throne” and is then told to “go back from whence it came.” This implies a cosmic trajectory — a path with an origin, a destination, and a return. The description of the sun’s motion as a journey with a defined course aligns with the modern understanding that the sun is not a static body but travels through space along a precise galactic orbit determined by gravitational forces.

If scientists speak about the scientific miracle in the Quran and Sunnah in mentioning a universal scientific fact that was only known very recently, then they should refer that not to the laws of nature in themselves, but to universal laws and systems that are determined by the Almighty, the All-Knowing. Hence, we demand that scientists discover where the sun goes at this tremendous speed and where it comes from. This also confirms to us that the Holy Quran and the Noble Prophetic Sunnah are nothing but the word of God inspired by God Almighty to the heart of the Chosen One, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, and that they are a miracle that will continue throughout the ages and generations until God wills.

The hadith of the sun’s prostration is an authentic Prophetic tafsir of Surah Yasin 38, affirmed by classical scholarship as an expression of universal submission to the Divine will. The concept of prostration applies to all creation — animate and inanimate — as voluntary or inherent submission to Allah’s command. Furthermore, the hadith’s description of the sun’s motion as a cosmic journey with a defined trajectory and return converges with the modern astronomical discovery that the sun is not stationary but moves through the galaxy at extraordinary velocity. The combination of theological depth and scientific prescience in a seventh-century narration constitutes evidence of its divine origin.
