Why Didn’t Allah Preserve the Bible and Torah? Qur’an 15:9 and the Trust Given to Ahl al-Kitab

Why Didn’t Allah Preserve the Previous Scriptures?

📌 Point of DoubtAllah Almighty mentions in several places in the Qur’an that previous scriptures were altered (tahrif), and that His final Book — the Qur’an — is the only one He promises to preserve until the Day of Judgment:

“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Reminder [the Qur’an], and indeed, We will be its guardian.”

Surah Al-Hijr 15:9 ✅

This raises a question — innocent or not — in the minds of people of earlier books (Ahl al-Kitab) and atheists alike:

“Why didn’t Allah preserve the previous books? Did He fail — forbidden be such a thought — to do so?” ❓

⭕ AnswerThe answer is very simple, and let me give an example to clarify:

Let’s say you left your car near my house, but you didn’t ask me to guard it. When you come back from somewhere, you find it damaged. Do you have the right to blame me? No. ✅

So too with this doubt: Did Allah promise to protect those previous books like He promised to protect the Qur’an?

No, He did not. In fact, the opposite is true — He entrusted them with the responsibility of guarding His Words. This is clearly mentioned both in their own scriptures and in our Book as Muslims. ✅

Evidence from the Bible

Romans 3:1–2Let’s look at some verses from the Bible itself that support this idea:

From Paul’s Epistle to the Romans, Chapter 3:

“What advantage then has the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision? Much in every way! Chiefly because to them were committed the oracles of God.”

Romans 3:1–2 ✅

Romans 3:3–4”What then? If some did not believe, will their unbelief nullify the faithfulness of God? Certainly not!”

Romans 3:3–4 ✅

So God held them responsible for guarding His words — and they failed.

1 Thessalonians 2:4From 1 Thessalonians, Chapter 2:

“But just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please men, but to please God who tests our hearts.”

1 Thessalonians 2:4 ✅

1 Timothy 1:11From 1 Timothy:

“according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.”

1 Timothy 1:11 ✅

Evidence from Deuteronomy

Deuteronomy 6:17From Deuteronomy, Chapter 6:

“You shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God, His testimonies, and His statutes which He has commanded you.”

Deuteronomy 6:17 ✅

Deuteronomy 6:20”When your son asks you tomorrow, saying, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies, the statutes, and the judgments which the Lord our God has commanded you?’”

Deuteronomy 6:20 ✅

Deuteronomy 8:1From Deuteronomy, Chapter 8:

“Therefore you shall keep all the commandments which I command you today, that you may be strong and go in and possess the land which you cross over to possess…”

Deuteronomy 8:1 ✅

Evidence from Jeremiah

Jeremiah 8:8From Jeremiah, Chapter 8:

“How can you say, ‘We are wise, For we have the law of the Lord’? Look, His pen has lied; The scribes have written falsely.”

Jeremiah 8:8 ✅

This verse aligns perfectly with many similar ones in the Qur’an.

Similar Meanings in the Qur’an

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:79Surah Al-Baqarah 2:79:

“Woe to those who write the Book with their own hands and then say, ‘This is from Allah,’ seeking a small price for it. Woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for what they earn thereby!” ✅

Surah Aal Imran 3:73Surah Aal Imran 3:73:

“O People of the Book! Why do you mix truth with falsehood and conceal the truth while you know?” ✅

Prophets Were Also Not Promised Protection from Being Killed

Luke 13:35Also, Allah did not promise to protect the prophets from being killed. For example, in the Gospel of Luke:

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her!”

Luke 13:35 ✅

Historical Manuscript Reality

Manuscript StudiesMoreover, historical manuscript studies show that changes did occur in the Bible. That’s expected since the Bible relied on manuscripts alone, unlike the Qur’an, which was preserved through memorization and transmission across generations. ✅

But that’s not the focus here — we’ve already provided evidence from their own books .

Where Does the Qur’an Say They Were Entrusted?

Objection
  • Okay, but where does the Qur’an say that Allah entrusted them with guarding the Book?
Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:44Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:44:

“Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light. The prophets who submitted to Allah used to judge by it for the Jews, as did the rabbis and scholars, according to what they had been entrusted with of Allah’s Book. And they were witnesses over it. So do not fear the people, but fear Me, and do not exchange My verses for a small price. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed – it is those who are the disbelievers.” ✅

➡️ So yes — God entrusted them, and they failed to fulfill that trust.

🔚 ConclusionGod never promised to preserve the previous books like He promised to preserve the Qur’an. Instead, He gave the duty of protection to the people of those books. They failed, and thus, the Qur’an came as the final and preserved message.
