Deficient in Mind and Religion — A Full Refutation

Table of Contents

Introduction

Opening The hadith “deficient in mind and religion” is one of the most famous hadiths that skeptics bring up to cast doubt on Muslim women’s religion. At the same time, this doubt is one of the funniest doubts, because the hadith originally contains the answer to the question from the most honorable of creation, peace and blessings be upon him. However, I wanted to talk more about it here, and some aspects of the status of women in Islam, and then compare its status with Christianity, secularism, and atheism, so that some of our women may thank God for the blessing of His religion.

First — The Full Hadith

The Hadith Text “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, addressed the people and exhorted them, then said: ‘O group of women, give in charity, for you are the majority of the people of Hell.’ One of the women among them said: ‘Why is that, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said: ‘Because of your frequent cursing,’ meaning, and your ingratitude to husbands. He said: ‘I have never seen anyone deficient in reason and religion more prevalent among the wise and intelligent than you.’ One of the women among them said: ‘What is the deficiency of her reason and religion?’ He said: ‘The testimony of two women among you is equal to the testimony of one man, and the deficiency of your religion is menstruation. One of you remains three or four days without praying.’”

Second — Explanation

Key Point Let us first agree that this hadith is authentic, as it was narrated in the two Sahihs. However, the meaning they promote is completely different from the meaning intended by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and this is what we will explain now.

1️⃣ Deficient in Religion

Meaning
The Prophet’s Own Explanation The Messenger ﷺ explained the meaning of those who are deficient in their religion by saying: “…and the deficiency in your religion is menstruation. If one of you remains for three or four days without praying.” So, a woman does not pray or fast when she menstruates, and this is from Allah’s kindness to her. Religion here means acts of worship, and this is not to blame her because it is beyond her control. Rather, it is from Allah’s kindness to her, and she is not sinful for what she does not do.

Al-Nawawi’s Explanation
Al-Nawawi — Best Explanation ”…The answer is that the apparent meaning of this hadith is that she will not be rewarded. The difference is that the sick person or the traveler used to do it with the intention of continuing to do it, even though he was qualified to do it. The menstruating woman is not like that, rather her intention is to leave the prayer during her menstrual period. In fact, it is forbidden for her to have the intention to pray during her menstrual period. The equivalent of her is the traveler or the sick person who used to pray the voluntary prayer at one time and leave it at another time, not intending to continue to do it. This is not recorded for him during his travel or illness during the time when he did not perform the voluntary prayer. And God knows best.”

Comparison — Menstruation in Islam Vs Christianity
Context We have previously said that menstruation and the resulting deficiency in worship are not a disgrace to women, and the evidence for that is several things:

Women May Enter the Mosque
Permissibility It is permissible for a woman to enter the mosque, indeed the Sacred Mosque, and to do what a pilgrim does except for circumambulation and prayer. The evidence for you is what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Aisha when he found her crying after giving birth: “This is something that God has decreed for the daughters of Adam, so do what a pilgrim does except for not circumambulating and not praying.” There is no evidence that prevents her from doing that.

Women May Recite Quran During Menstruation
Permissibility It is permissible for a woman to recite verses of the Qur’an while menstruating, but without touching the Mushaf, in accordance with the words of Allah the Almighty: {None shall touch it except the purified ones} [Al-Waqi’ah: 79]. This is because there is no legal text that forbids her from doing so. Rather, there is an authentic hadith from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) in which she said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to remember Allah at all times.” Al-Bukhari included it in a mu’allaq form and Muslim, Abu Dawud, Al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah included it. Al-Bukhari, Al-Tabari, Ibn Al-Mundhir and Dawud Al-Dhahiri used it as evidence for the permissibility of someone in a state of ritual impurity remembering Allah the Almighty and reciting the Qur’an.

Eating From Her Hand is Permissible
Permissibility There is nothing wrong with eating from the hand of a menstruating woman, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Your menstruation is not in your hand.” Narrated by Muslim and Al-Nasa’i.

The Prophet’s Conduct with Aisha During Menstruation
The Sunnah The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, used to recline in Aisha’s lap, may God be pleased with her, and read the Qur’an while she was menstruating (Bukhari). If menstruation occurs and the obligatory duties are not fulfilled, the woman is not sinful for it, and it is permissible for her to recite the Qur’an, enter the Sacred Mosque, and eat from her hand. Indeed, the most honorable of creation, may God bless him and grant him peace, used to recline in his wife’s lap while she was menstruating.

Where is the Blame and Insult to Her?
The Challenge to Critics Okay, now that we’ve explained the matter, I’ll refer you to an excerpt from the Book of Leviticus in the Bible, and one of the Bible commentaries on what a woman becomes when she menstruates 😌.

For English Readers — What These Scans ShowThese scans are from Christian/Coptic legal or interpretive material discussing ritual impurity connected to menstruation.

The highlighted sections say that a menstruating woman is considered ritually impure, and that her impurity affects whatever she lies on, sits on, or touches.

Scan 1 — From Kitāb al-Muqaddas / Old Testament Purity LawThe highlighted Arabic text says that when a woman has a flow of blood, she remains in impurity for seven days.

Whoever touches her becomes impure until evening.

Anything she lies on during her impurity becomes impure, and anything she sits on becomes impure.

If someone touches her bed, he must wash his clothes, bathe with water, and remain impure until evening.

If her blood continues for many days outside the usual period, she remains impure for all the days of the flow.

Scan 2 — From al-Tafsīr al-Kāmil li-l-Kitāb al-MuqaddasThe highlighted commentary explains that the passage deals with ritual impurity attached to women because of their monthly cycles.

It says this makes the woman impure, and everything she touches becomes impure.

Main PointThese scans are useful when comparing claims about women and menstruation in religious law.

They show that Biblical law and Christian commentary contain very strict purity rules regarding menstruation, including the idea that a menstruating woman causes ritual impurity to people, bedding, seats, and objects she touches.

2️⃣ Intellectual Deficiency

Meaning
The Prophet’s Own Explanation The Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, explaining the meaning of those deficient in reason, “The testimony of two women among you is equal to the testimony of one man.” He said this based on the Almighty’s saying in Surat Al-Baqarah 282:

“…and bring to witness two witnesses from among your men. But if there are not two men, then a man and two women from among those whom you accept as witnesses, so that if one of them errs, the other may remind her. And let not the witnesses refuse when they have been informed.” {They were not called upon, and do not tire of writing it down, whether it is small or great, until its term. That is more just in the sight of Allah and more upright as a witness.}

The deficiency here is only related to the issue of giving testimony, as a woman may forget or be overcome by emotion, so Allah commanded the addition of another woman with her to remind her if she forgets {lest one of them should err, then the other may remind her.}

Al-Asqalani
Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani — Fath Al-Bari “…and that the mind accepts increase and decrease, and so does faith, as mentioned above. The intention of mentioning the deficiency in women is not to blame them for that because it is part of the origin of creation…”

Al-Qurtubi
Al-Qurtubi — Al-Mufhim “..and the mind that women lack is: verification in matters, investigation in them, and reaching the utmost perfection in them, and they are often in that, unlike men. The origin of the mind is: knowledge, and it may be said of calmness, dignity, and verification in matters, and scholars have disagreement about the limit of the mind required for accountability, and this is not the place to mention it.”

Women’s Achievements — Muslim and Non-Muslim
Evidence Against the Slander If the lack of intelligence among these charlatans is a disparagement of women and their being considered stupid or something similar, then why do we find women successful in many fields? Let us list some examples:
The Great Imams and Their Mothers Al-Bukhari, Al-Shafi’i, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Al-Hafiz ibn Hajar, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Baz; do you know what these have in common other than that they are among the greatest imams and commentators of this nation? Their mothers raised them (with the exception of Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani, who was raised by his sister). That is, we would never have heard of these great names had it not been for their mothers raising them and bringing them up in the religion.

Other Doubts Addressed

The Verse {Whatever is lawful for you of women} They will bring up the verse {Whatever is lawful for you of women} and say that “what” refers to non-rational beings, and we have previously responded to this and explained that it can also refer to rational beings.
The Verse {And men have a degree over women} They may bring up the verse {And men have a degree over women}, while the original verse before it was {And women have rights similar to those of their husbands according to what is equitable}. Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir interpreted it with another verse: “And the Almighty’s saying: {And men have a degree over them} means in spending, taking care of interests, guardianship, and differences in creation, as the Almighty said: {Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend from their wealth} [An-Nisa’: 34].”
The Basic Principle — Equality The Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “Women are the twin halves of men.” So the basic principle is that they are equal, except in relation to the nature and duties of both work and women. God Almighty said: “The male is not like the female.”
The Most Beloved Person to the Prophet Was a Woman The most beloved person to the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, was a woman!!! On the authority of Abu Uthman, who said: Amr ibn al-‘As (may Allah be pleased with him) told me: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah 📌be upon him) sent him in command of the army of Dhat as-Salasil. I came to him and said: ‘Which of the people is most beloved to you?’ He said: ‘Aishah. 📌’ I said: ‘Of the men?’ He said: ‘Her father.’ I said: ‘Then who?’ He said: ‘Then ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab.’ He enumerated the men.” Narrated by al-Bukhari (3662) and Muslim (2384).
His Love for Khadija The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) loved his deceased wife Khadija (may Allah be pleased with her). He loved those who loved her. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said about this: “I was never jealous of any of the Prophet’s wives except Khadija, even though I did not live to see her. Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered a sheep, he would say: ‘Send it to Khadija’s friends.’ One day I angered him and said: ‘Khadija!’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘I have been blessed with her love.’” Narrated by Muslim / 4464
His Love for Fatimah and His Daughters The Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, said about his daughter Fatimah, may God be pleased with her: “Fatimah is a part of me, and whatever hurts her hurts me.” Narrated by Muslim, 5847.

The Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “Whoever has a daughter born to him and does not love her, does not humiliate her, and does not prefer his son over her - meaning the male - God will admit him into Paradise because of her.” Narrated by Ahmad, no. 1957, and authenticated by al-Hakim.

The Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “Whoever has three daughters, educates them, shows them mercy, and takes care of them, Paradise is guaranteed for him.” It was said: “O Messenger of God, what if there are two?” He said: “And what if there are two?” Some of the people thought that if he had said “one,” he would have said “one.” Narrated by Ahmad, 14181, and authenticated by al-Albani.

The Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “Whoever has two sisters or two daughters, so he treated them well as long as they were with him. He and I were in Paradise like these two, and he joined his two fingers.”

Narrator: Anas bin Malik | Graded by: Al-Albani | Source: As-Silsilah As-Sahihah | Page/Number: 1026 | Ruling: Authentic according to the sum of its chains of transmission. Graduation: It was narrated by Ahmad (12593) in a similar manner, and by Ibn Abi Shaybah (25945) with a slight difference, and by Al-Khatib in Tarikh Baghdad (8/284) and the wording is his.

His Last Commandments And do not forget that among his last commandments in the farewell sermon was “Treat women well.” 😌
Important Observation on Charlatans Here I would like to point out an important point that makes Muslim women know these charlatans for what they really are. One of the two non-Muslim women I mentioned earlier was included by two article writers from two different websites whose names I will not mention. The first writer is Muslim and the second is against Islam. Imagine with me, my honorable sister, that it is the same topic “deficient in reason and religion” and the same example, except that the first used it to refute the doubt and the second used it to confirm the doubt!!! You have a broad perspective.
Quranic Honoring of Women God set both Pharaoh’s wife and Mary, the mother of Jesus - peace be upon them - as an example to be followed, and they are both women!!!
Honoring of Women in the Distorted Bible — Old Testament Starting from the story of creation, where we find in Genesis 3: “12 Then Adam said, ‘The woman whom you gave to be with me - she gave me from the tree, and I ate.’ 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, ‘What is this that you have done?’ And the woman said, ‘The serpent deceived me, and I ate.’”

And even if they tried, as usual, to disavow the Old Testament, we find Paul, whom they sanctify and his words, saying in his first letter to Timothy: “13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve, 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived fell into transgression.”

While the Holy Quran informed us that they were both wrong, as in Surat Al-A’raf, verse 22: {So he led them astray by deception. But when they tasted of the tree, their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to patch up. And their Lord called to them, “Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you that Satan is to you a clear enemy?”}

And in Surat Al-Baqarah 36: {So Satan caused them to slip from it and removed them from that in which they had been, and We said, “Descend, some of you an enemy to others. And for you upon the earth is a place of settlement and provision for a time.”}

Then He makes the woman’s pregnancy as if it were a result of Eve’s sin, peace be upon her, as we find in the same book: “16 And He said to the woman, ‘I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth; in pain you will give birth to children. And your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.’”

While in the Qur’an we find something different: {And We have enjoined upon man, concerning his parents. His mother carried him with hardship upon hardship, and his gestation and weaning are in two years. [He said], “Be grateful to Me and to your parents. To Me is the final destination.”} — Luqman / 14

And here I have only mentioned what came in the Noble Qur’an, not to mention some of the Prophet’s hadiths in this regard.

Women Between Islam Christianity Liberal Secularism and Atheism

Muslim Women and the Pursuit of Knowledge and Work

The Basic Principle The basic principle here is that women should remain at home and seek knowledge there, in accordance with the Almighty’s saying: {And abide in your houses} and in accordance with the Prophet’s saying: “Seeking knowledge is a duty upon every Muslim.” This is to protect women from the dangers of mixing with men and women and so on. Priority is given to Islamic knowledge, followed by beneficial worldly knowledge.
Work As for work, the basic principle is to seek knowledge. However, there are circumstances that require a woman to go out to work, such as not having a provider such as a husband, father, or brother, or a deficiency in a certain field such as medicine or teaching. It was mentioned in Sahih Al-Bukhari that when Allah imposed the hijab on women, He, peace be upon him, said: “Allah has permitted you to go out for your needs,” and of course, this is while adhering to the Islamic hijab and avoiding mixing with other men as much as possible and avoiding seclusion.
